Advanced Electronics Industry:
Identifying Technology Gaps
May 5, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Purpose:

This session will review key electronics industry roadmaps to identify important industry technology needs. The session will then develop an understanding of current collaborative R&D efforts now underway to meet these technology needs and support the industry’s R&D agendas. Finally, the session will focus on the identified gap areas where additional work is needed.

Who Should Attend:

Senior and technology managers from industry, private and government labs, and universities should attend this session if they are interested in learning ways to use industry collaboration to achieve their R&D agenda.

Collaborative Opportunities

What Next

Objectives:

  1. Review the industry roadmaps and identify critical technology gaps,
  2. Report on a collaborative industry/government effort to assess electronics technical resource and gap issues,
  3. Discuss the research/development needs of the industry,
  4. Identify collaborative opportunities for
    NCMS projects,
  5. Review funding scenarios.

Background:

Product development in the electronics industry continues to require increased performance, reduced size, increased reliability, and lower cost. As a result, the manufacturing capability is constantly being challenged by the demand for higher density interconnects, finer pitch component packaging technologies, improved reliability, and, of course, reduced costs. Advanced interconnect and component package technologies are also challenging the industry infrastructure tools supporting the design, modeling, board routing, assembly, and product test and reliability processes. The industry has developed roadmaps identifying the technology development needs in manufacturing. It must now define potential pathways and resources to achieve the industry vision.

Technique:

During the session, the NEMI and IPC Roadmaps will be reviewed. A preliminary report on a new industry-wide assessment on R&D activities will be discussed. High priority technology gaps identified in the roadmaps and potential approaches to filling them will be presented. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about collaborative efforts being used to address their R&D needs. The objective of the session is to continue the collaborative momentum in the electronics industry by identifying potential joint efforts to address technology gaps.
