U.S. Heat Treat Industry: Achieving the Vision
May 4, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Purpose:

This session will provide an assessment of the ASM Heat Treat Society’s research and development plan. Attendees will take part in identifying and quantifying the enabling technologies critical for implementation and learn how their organization can take part in achieving the technology development. Priority areas for technology development will be identified and potential collaborative projects discussed.

Who Should Attend:

Heat treating is a core competency in global manufacturing. In order for the U.S. to establish leadership, our nation’s heat treating companies and R&D community need to take a proactive role in developing the critical technologies identified by the ASM Heat Treat Society to achieve that leadership. Companies that use heat treatment, universities, government and private labs should attend and be prepared to learn ways to use collaboration to achieve the needed U.S. technology vision.

Objectives:

  1. Showcase Heat Treat Vision 2020,
  2. Understand the research needs of the heat treat industry,
  3. Identify the enabling technologies,
  4. Identify the investors,
  5. Define the collaboration opportunities,
  6. Establish the "roadmap" to implementation.

Background:

Over the past several months, the ASM Heat Treat Society has striven to develop a program to modernize their industry. With the assistance of the U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Industrial Technology and the Metal Treating Institute, a Vision has been documented and workshops conducted to develop the roadmap based on the identified needs. It is now time to define the high priority research needs and the mechanisms to achieve the vision.

Technique:

During this session, the Vision developed by the heat treating community will be presented. The high priority needs will be quantified and potential implementation plans discussed. Attendees will be provided the opportunity to hear about a few of the most recent efforts established to address the vision. The objective of the session is to start the momentum for collaboration in the heat treat industry.
